Do you have a specific example in mind? (We’re talking about LLMs and related things specifically, I assume?)

The whole argument seems badly framed. The idea that AI can or will be able to do science (meaning design or carry out experiments) better than human researchers is marketing hype. It’s like starting a debate over whether we should eliminate stoves now that you can do it all with the Insta-Pot ®.

I’m ok damaging it at this point — I think I can find a replacement knob on eBay — but would like to keep the damage limited.

I’m thinking about trying to drill it out somehow but I’m not sure if I have a small enough drill bit…

Everyone saying that they missed the point is missing the point. They understand exactly what Judge Dredd is and are vice signalling. They want to recruit deportation judges they can trust to deliver punitive and racist decisions.

I wish, but I can’t until I fix channel 1!!

Hex wrench obtained but one of the tiny set screws in these knobs is on so tight that it’s stripping the hex wrench — infuriating!

I’ve only played with it a bit but I loooove the way the traces look on the CRT screen.

(Alas, I’m currently blocked by not having the world’s tiniest hex wrench.)

So I’m pretty sure that when I disassemble it further, I’m gonna find a resistor that had exploded in such a way as to, for a little while, create capacitance.

I wake up in the middle of the night and go “oh, in other words, it’s taking a derivative”. This is an easy thing to do in electronics — you just need a resistor and a capacitor in series.

Here’s my fun story about this: I got it used off Craigslist, guy says channel 1 doesn’t work, I try it out and before breaking completely it does this weird thing where it’ll display a sine wave but change the AMPLITUDE when I adjust the FREQUENCY. I say “huh, weird” and go to sleep.

Alas, they show up in chronological, not quality, order
