On Jan. 19, 1981, Muhammad Ali rushed to a man threatening to jump from a Los Angeles office building. “I’m your brother, I really want to help you,” Ali said. He climbed out, put his arm around him, and led him to safety. Captured by Boris Yaro, the moment showed Ali’s compassion beyond the ring.

In 1895 at age 60, “Stagecoach Mary” Fields became the first African-American woman mail carrier in the U.S. Armed with a rifle and revolver, she braved Montana’s harsh terrain. Admired by her community for her grit, courage, and kindness, she left a lasting legacy as a trailblazer of the Wild West.
