I got this! Which was the first time people went "Oh hey that's Johnny Cash!". I did that in December. Since then I've kept practicing to the point I did the above!
Why Johnny Cash?
I'm not a fan of his music.
Honestly, it was for a gift for someone. And somehow became a running joke and

A huge step forward! If only I worried about proportion and made his face a little squishier and the chin better it may have looked more like Johnny Cash. Still, this blew my socks off at the time and showed me I was on the right path. After changing programs and painting technique...

So in July after I did more practice, I tried again. Now it sorta looked like a cartoony Johnny Cash, which was a step forward. But I knew I needed to try something new, and get bolder which led to another painting and then I came back to Johnny Cash which led to...

The next year I boldly tried to do "realistic" painting without a photo reference. As you can see, it's one of the only paintings I've abandoned. Looking back on it, there's something to it but I wasn't happy...

Two years ago, my confidence was bad so I decided I would do stylized black-and-white art. Interesting idea, but not really great, I definitely had to tell people it was Johnny Cash...

Which led me to this 10 days later (and one I've posted before). Vincent Price's eyes, Adrien Brody's nose and Abe Vigoda's cheek and jaw. Five months later I went for another attempt and got the first image in this chain! Basically, always keep practicing and always keep painting!

Back in last October I attempted this but quickly realized I had gone as far as I could using just soft brushes and needed to make a change to textured, hard brushes.

May I say, after following (and laughing) at her comics for years (I even bought a comic from her and laugh at it every time I look at it), seeing @exocomics.bsky.social break out into doing full-on books is heart-warming. Also, it's an excellent all-ages book and you should go buy it.
