QTPOP is a theory I developed out of the experience of being brown and on tumblr in the 2010s. Fandom is really meaningful community building, and tumblr was toxic as hell for someone still developing. You can read more about the lens and how I use it in the image.
The image is just text that reads: QTPOP, as a lens, understands fandom as a site of imagination, utilized by the most marginalized to respond to a popular culture that steals from us and then erases and demonizes us. We use it to critique dominant culture and to reclaim, subvert, and create stories that reflect us, our experiences, and the worlds we want to live in. What are the properties of this theory? 1 POC artists and content creators drive popular culture, we have a right to take up space here. 2 Actively undoes shame, no ‘you can’t like this character for xyz reason’, no ‘you can’t support this person’. QTPOC folks are not responsible for white creators. 2a critique and shame are not the same thing, there is always room for critique 3 Centers QTPOC joy + desires, nothing is too much here 4 Imagines non-capitalist forms of sharing and community building 5 Fandom is not separate from ‘real life’ it is not relegated to some less meaningful place because it’s ‘not cannon’ 5a it is a radical place capable of revolution 5b It is also not outside of historical context or free from white capitalist patriarchy (apparent in the toxic attributes of fandom culture) 6 We stay aware of the larger contexts (internalized racism, homophobia, settler colonialism etc) that lead us to be drawn to certain stories (historical as well as personal) 6a Exploring these topics fictionally can be healing 6b It also matters what stories are getting told over and over again 7 Fandom is a process of meaning making
