It takes all of Laurent's willpower to bite back an angry retort, so he settles on a sarcastic one instead. "I can't help but notice your mood. One would think we're on a suicide mission with the way you're acting."

"We might be."

"…What?" Kris hadn't looked away from the ruins when making his grave statement, but Laurent could tell he didn't say it lightly. "But how? Mikoto led us here, didn't she?"

"Yes, her Echo vision helped us to find the ruins, and it's not as though her vision was tampered with. But…" Kris sighs, finally tearing his gaze away from the ruins to look at Laurent. "I can't explain it. I just have a bad feeling—like we've missed something."

"Hm?" Just before stepping outside, Laurent notices something out of the corner of his eye, and he awkwardly shifts the food to take a look.

Laurent sees Gale kneeling at a row of carnations, gently caressing the petals on a red bloom. A small, soft smile brightens his expression as he regards the flower, oblivious to Laurent looking at him. He seems so… at peace. I don't want to walk out and interrupt…

As if he heard Laurent's thoughts, Gale looks up from the carnation with a hint of surprise and promptly stands up. "Oh! Do you need help? Sorry, I might have brought too much this time. It's a bit heavy…"

Laurent looks up from the book he's reading and sees Gale turn away in a huff. Again. What is with him…?

Gale hasn't spoken at all today, and it's putting Laurent… on edge. I'm so used to him needling and bothering me that I don't know what I'm supposed to make of this…?

Sure, he was a bit annoyed that Gale ate the last pastry, but it's not like he laid claim to it, or anything. Gale can eat whatever he makes whenever he wants, Laurent thinks as he tries to be less grumpy about it.

But he hadn't even said anything about it to Gale—Laurent knew that it would be childish to be upset over a pastry. He can get one from a bakery later. Sure, it's not the one Gale made, so it's not going to be as good. It's not the end of the world, though. Just an annoyance. An inconvenience.
