New powers to further restrict protest are unnecessary, undermine our rights to freedom of expression and ability to practice our religion freely.

We do not see the rights of worshippers and the rights of protestors as inherently in contradiction. As Quakers we are often worshippers, protestors and community members simultaneously.

For Quakers, faith and action are inseparable. Peaceful protest, prayer, and non-violent action are expressions of our worship. When this is criminalised, our religious freedom is under attack.

There is no need for further restrictions to protest based on the concept of cumulative disruption. Repeated protests can be evidence of strength of feeling towards an ongoing injustice and are an important democratic mechanism for citizens to have their voices heard.

The theme of Quaker Week this year is Love Your Neighbour.

Listen to this beautiful episode of the BBC’s Daily Service, delivered by @timquaker.bsky.social – a Quaker and general secretary of @globalquakers.bsky.social – which reflects on the meaning and importance of loving your neighbour.

"An attack against one faith community is an attack against us all. "

The @churchesengland.bsky.social Presidents have issued a joint statement condemning yesterday's synagogue attack and antisemitism.

Words of the statement: We are horrified at the terror attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur, a Holy Day for the Jewish community. We stand with the Jewish community at this time and categorically reject all forms of antisemitism. Those who hold this ideology must be challenged and must never be allowed to win.

We pray for the Jewish community, who will be deeply traumatised by this event. We pray for comfort for those who have lost loved ones. We thank the emergency services for their swift response, and we recognise with respect how, once again, they have put themselves in harm’s way to protect the community. We pray that all will come together in condemning this senseless attack.

An attack against one faith community is an attack against us all. We commit ourselves to work for positive relationships between faiths and communities in our nation, now and always.

Violence is never right. Killing is never right. Targeting people because of who they are is never right.

We give thanks for all those, from all backgrounds, who have come together to oppose hatred and promote living together peacefully. It is vital that we all continue to do so.

Great to see this case against peaceful climate protesters dropped. It should never have been brought in the first place.

For Quakers, faith and action are inseparable.

We are deeply concerned by the ongoing repression of dissent.

As US nuclear weapons return to Britain, we re-affirm the commitment to nuclear disarmament rooted in our faith.

We join hundreds of groups in calling for measures to prevent nuclear war, and redirect military spending to peacekeeping, climate action, and meeting human needs.

“Living among these neighbours, and loving them all, is inextricably tied up with my faith. Through my relationships with my neighbours, I come to understanding something of the divine which is in us all.”
