We *still* don't know who invented pinball.

The blog continues its updates, as Bob Whitehead's Boxing gets its time in the spotlight. Unassuming but a blast to play, particularly if you're using the original joysticks and want to experience actual exhaustion in your boxing match. www.atariarchive.org/blog/boxing-...

A bicycle can get you from New York to LA, so will a jet plane. In one sense they are the exact same thing; in another they are nothing alike. In one sense we are working within traditional genres …

listen #AT40 rockheads, no spoilers — and while Grand Funk might be by later to save our asses, this is one of your few opportunities to crank the distorted guitar!

Come to the arcade, where there are now as many as 18(!) different Pong clones to play.

I have to leave early and take the DeLorean as far back as 1954 before the #AT40 is done, though, so please arrange your own ride back to 2025.

And also wish @porpster.bsky.social a belated happy birthday!

September 29, 1973

Big day: Rose Mary Woods is busy making transcriptions of President Nixon’s recordings and probably thinking about “Alice’s Restaurant”.

The music industry is in shambles, but still persists in creating enough music to craft a weekly #AT40.
Rose Mary Woods demonstrates the “Rose Mary Stretch,” the explanation given for her role in erasing a big chunk of audio tape that seemed pretty detrimental to President Richard Nixon during the now quaint period in American history known as “Watergate.”

tfw you crack the code on what was going on in 1974
An ad for Ramtek's Clean Sweep, a 1974 video game, reads: "Streaking is New | Clean Sweep in Newer." It's overlaid on top of the Cash Box Top 100 Singles from the same issue, which features Ray Stevens' "The Streak" as the #1 song that week.

A quiz for you:

What pioneering coin-op machine released mid-decade drove electro-mechanical amusements into new locations and pushed a new coin price for games?

Would you believe that it happened twice?

These are the bizarre, parallel tales of the quiz game booms in the 40s and 60s.
