Hello new followers! I'm Kevin, game historian, science communicator, and fighting games old head. My history focus is on the early days of gaming history in particular, so I want to plug some of my work: first and foremost with my book, for sale through Limited Run (and on Amazon in paperback).

Played like 20 minutes of the 2011 Star Raiders for an upcoming video and you know what, it seemed better than how it reviewed. Perfectly cromulent game

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

If you want to count Spaceballs I would totally put it at number four of my personal rankings and bump everything else down, but:

1: Star Wars
2: Empire
3: Last Jedi
4: Return of the Jedi
5: Force Awakens
6. Phantom Menace
7: Solo
8: Rogue One
9: Sith
10: Clones
11: Rise of Skywalker
haven’t seen ROS or Solo but this seems like a pretty ball-knowing list from Pritzker, particularly if he volunteered the name “Star Wars” rather than “A New Hope”

I will be honest, I did not realize the unreleased Viewpoint 2064 even had a final version. As a fan of the original game and its various incarnations though, I can't wait to sit down with this over the holiday weekend!
FOUND! Viewpoint 2064 - FINAL VERSION preserved (N64)

Baby Pac-Man’s code base for the video game portion is based off an officially unreleased Bally Arcade console pac-man rip off done by Midway’s Bill Adams that was canned after Atari got litigious over their exclusive rights
i was going through my X archives and found this by @superpodsaga.com, which I qrt'd at some point years ago

so, let me bring the question back: what is the most useless piece of video game knowledge you know?

A great time as ever! Now if only there were enough Bally Professional Arcade fans to bring back the Astro Bash
Atari Party 2025 was amazing. It was great catching up with @nathaniellockhart.bsky.social and @atarispot.bsky.social. I got to meet up with @atariarchive.org for the first time too!

An absolutely gigantic thank you to @rectapete.bsky.social and @billlange.bsky.social for organizing the event.

One of the best fighting games of the 2010s and honestly one more people should pick up. It has the pacing of Vampire Savior mashed up with Street Fighter; just intense offensive action and movement coupled with periods of deliberate space control and positioning
12 years ago today, Killer Instinct (2013) was originally released on Xbox One worldwide as a system launch title. It was developed by Double Helix Studios and published by Microsoft Studios.

I've been saying this since the big AI push started, if you didn't bother to spend time making it, why should I spend my time looking at it? Why is my time so much less valuable than yours? If you don't value the work that went into it, I'm not going to either. You're disrespecting me and my time.
Why am I so against generative AI in games?

Because I simply do not want my initial reaction to art to be one of suspicion and scrutiny, AI slop is fundamentally damaging my relationship to art and artistry, and I am deeply resentful that it is forcing me to be guarded when I should be wowed.

To add onto this, Jaquays also was involved in video games, particularly with Coleco early on and later with Quake and Age of Empires. I wrote about one of her projects, Tarzan, a while ago (sadly not long after she passed away, so I couldn’t interview her too): gamehistory.org/atari-2600-t...
