need assistance with a future Retronauts topic: video games where digging is a big mechanic, or there's at least one digging-focused level?

Remember how I kept talking about the Metroidvania book I had in the works, and then it kinda dropped off the radar? I didn't lose interest. I was just working with a Legit Major Publisher (Dark Horse!) on turning it into the pilot release for a Press Run team-up: www.gamespot.com/articles/exp...

This new book will explore the history of the enduring metroidvania genre in video games.

Alright, let’s recommend some books about games. This will be a thread I add stuff to as I think of it.

Kurt Kalata writes about all kinds of games but if you’ve known his work as long as I have, he’s Mr. Castlevania. I really liked this one.

Doing something a little different this morning at @retroxp.bsky.social: there *is* a 3D Sonic the Hedgehog game on the Sega Saturn, but instead of a traditional platformer, it's a racer. @kimimithegameeatingshemonster.com has all the details on this game that showed off the Saturn's power.

Had a dream a while back in which I discovered the existence of the "Grave of the Fireflies/Super Mario World 2-in-1" for the Wii. It basically functioned as a DVD except for a "special features" section that literally only had an SNES emulator playing Mario World. It went for absurd prices on eBay
The cover for a fake Wii game consisting of both the 1988 Studio Ghibli film, Grave of the Fireflies, and Super Mario World; both are represented on the cover, the former by the poster of Seita carrying his sister Setsuko across a field and the latter by the artwork of Mario wearing a cape and riding Yoshi. The cover promises "TWO classics in ONE!".

"A handheld game console isn't fun if it's not in colour"

Happy 35th birthday, Sega Game Gear! Released in Japan on 6th October 1990!

Sega's foray into 8-bit handheld gaming carved out a respectable little fan base, has some interesting periphs, and is still getting new games made for it today.
A Japanese ad for the Game Gear with a lady sporting some pleasingly orange and tan clothing and a straw hat holding up a Gear Gear in both hands and smiling at the viewer. Game screenies zigzag along the bottom.
