In Yoshi's Island, a cave background sparkles, but only when Yoshi moves. This is achieved in an inventive way by making many 1-pixel "pinholes" in the background through which a field of stars is visible. The parallax motion shows the stars intermittently, creating sparkles.

Clean Sweep is, mechanically, very different from the GC game, even if it's once again about cleaning a house. Chibi's plug can be lengthened; great for vacuuming, rappelling, or just tossing it like a meteor-hammer at dirt ghosts. Much different, and more interesting, than the Chibi-Blaster.

Mostly it kills me that there's exactly one Chibi-Robo game that was never officially released in the US (Okaeri! Chibi-Robo / Clean Sweep), and it might in fact be the best game in the series - and we only didn't get it because Park Patrol was a Wal-Mart exclusive and didn't sell gangbusters.

The other one, Photo Finder, *seems* more in line with the first three games, but runs like garbage, relies on a camera gimmick that doesn't work well (the 3DS camera is Not Great), is extremely grindy, and axes much of the whimsy in the visual and sound design.

Zip-Lash is probably the better-known flop of the two, as it got a physical release with a special edition Amiibo (that I'm still kicking myself for not getting; love that little dude). Unlike the entire series, it's a 2D platformer that feels like off-brand Kirby. It's oddly desolate.

I should really write about The Chibi-Robo Games, because they're (almost) all delightful little romps with fun character growth.

I especially want to write about the one-two punch of 3DS titles that killed the series. Because both of them are case-studies in drifting too far from your source.

I should really reboot my detective game concept. I feel like it could really go places if I just let loose with the writing and maybe boil it a bit harder.

Happy 31st Doom ][: Heck on Earth

Here's Doom II on the PowerVR PCX2 through the Dec 29 2000 build of Doomsday (the only GL port that would behave with the SGL MiniGL driver)

there's no flares because they're depthreads on doomsday, and pvr1 doesn't do depth buffers
