Similar in some respects. Space Pigs on the wing are still pigs on the wing.

Well, back then… 2002-2010 we only had dial up internet and no cellular… good AM/FM radio stations though.

Had something like this monster on the roof. But lived in the Adirondacks and was picking up Albany, NY. Digital was a hard transition and we lost stations for just not getting enough signal in.

I’m inside 10 miles and use rabbit ears w/built in amp. When I was further out in that 40mi range we needed a “deep fringe” type antenna and had external amp. Took some seasonal re-aiming and sometime even catching reflected signal from hills behind us.

You’ll totally nail it I’m sure. Did mine 30+ years ago now. Been mostly CW/Digital QRP but keep very active with EmComm too. You’re going to do great and welcome to the hobby!

Super, now look up local ARES/RACES operations with near by clubs and get some experience at what’s happening near you!

How far are you from broadcasters? Are you using a directional (yagi) type antenna? Are you where the trees are dropping leaves? Do you have an amplifier in line from antenna to TV? Digital broadcast is most or nothing vs analog where you would get a fuzzy image.

Yeah DMR feels like VoIP with more steps when you don’t have a local repeater or good simplex. Winlink wants to find the internet to do the heavy lift, though P2P works great too. With the IP email being designed to stay up thru atomic war last mile gates make sense.

Got an 878uvii here too. It’s been really nice and over the years with firmware updates keeps surprising me with new features.
