But as they were washing their clothes, the mother said, they were surrounded by 20 armed officers in “full riot gear” and arrested. The mother, identified in court documents as N.G.C., had been living in the United States for around two years. She said the officers detained her with her daughter at a Chicago airport, where they had no access to showers, phones or the ability to brush their teeth. “The food they gave us was not edible,” the mother said in court documents. “We didn’t eat anything for days. They didn’t even give us water to drink.” After about two days, they were transferred to the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Dilley, Texas, which N.G.C. described as a living hell. “Sometimes my daughter doesn’t want to leave our room because she is so sad and just wants to leave this prison so badly. She cries and cries about all of this. I am so worried that I barely eat,” N.G.C. said. masthead: The Marshall Project An analysis by The Marshall Project of Immigration and Customs Enforcement data obtained by the Deportation Data Project found that the Trump administration’s revival of family detention has swept thousands of children into ICE custody. At least 3,800 children under age 18, including 20 infants, have been booked since Trump took office. A 1997 settlement, known as Flores, provides protections for children in immigrant detention to try and ensure their needs are met, and a judge continues to monitor the case today. A federal court has interpreted the legal agreement to mean that it is generally excessive for a child to be held with their family in custody by ICE for more than 20 days. masthead: The Marshall Project The Marshall Project’s analysis counted over 1,300 children who have been held in detention longer than 20 days this year. ICE told the judge overseeing the Flores settlement that it is minimizing the detention of children, writing in a report filed this month that its “primary goal is to ensure that minors are discharged from custody as quickly as possible.” But the data shows a spike in releases from detention clustered around the 20-day benchmark, which former Department of Homeland Security staffers say indicates the government is choosing to hold families as long as possible to increase the likelihood of deporting them directly from detention. It is hard to fight deportation cases with scarce legal resources in detention, and the poor living conditions make it more likely people will leave the country voluntarily, even if they have valid legal claims to remain.

Immigrants’ rights groups, lawyers and lawmakers have warned for weeks about deteriorating conditions inside the building, which also houses immigration courts. Federal law enforcement officers have been stationed in the building’s hallways since at least May 20 to make arrests moments after immigrants appear in court. People have been detained on the 10th floor for “days and weeks at a time without showers, medication or a change of clothes,” with only minimal food and outside contact, according to the New York Immigration Coalition. “The American Dream,” the man recording the videos says in Spanish. “Immigration, 26 Federal Plaza.” Thousands of people have faced arrest after showing up for court-ordered ICE check-ins, and immigration court hearings, as part of the Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda. The administration has effectively “de-legalized” tens of thousands of immigrants, including people who show up to immigration courts each week only to have their cases dismissed, with federal agents waiting to arrest them on the other side of the courtroom doors. Those actions have radically expanded a pool of “undocumented” people to add to the president’s demands for mass deportations.

Last spring, Tisch under former Mayor Eric Adams unleashed cops to issue criminal summonses to e-bike riders and cyclists for infractions like running red lights or riding the wrong way, while still giving regular traffic tickets to motorists for the same offenses. Mamdani, who kept Tisch on the job, on Monday reiterated a campaign position, telling Newsday that criminal summonses were not the way to go. But he has yet to tell the top cop to change course. Tisch's summons spree has led to bizarre and violent arrests of cyclists and e-bike riders, and ensnared thousands of New Yorkers in the criminal justice system for violations that previously were subject to a traffic ticket they could pay online. The tactics raised particular concerns among delivery workers who rely on e-bikes, and many of whom are immigrants. The police blitz has continued apace with new cases coming to court as recently as last week, said Peter Beadle, an attorney who recently represented two e-bike riders. Beadle supports Mamdani's focus on improving infrastructure like the Williamsburg Bridge, but called on City Hall to ditch the crackdown, arguing that it violates New Yorkers' Constitutional rights because they're subject to harsher enforcement on a bike than in a car. "The policy definitely should end. It’s an equal protection violation," Beadle told Streetsblog. "The clients that call me they’re afraid of their job applications, they’re afraid of immigration issues."

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Just a handful of days after Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s jobs portal tallied more than 50,000 applicants, his mayoral transition fund collected over $1 million. “None of this would have been possible without everyday New Yorkers willing to spare $5, $10, or $20 to help build a government that will deliver for working people,” Mamdani said in a written statement. “I’m grateful for every dollar New Yorkers have contributed to make this vision of an affordable, more livable city a reality.” The average donation of the 12,707 submissions is roughly $77.65, the statement detailed. Furthermore, the sheer number of donors is bounds away from Mayor Eric Adams’ and former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s transition funds. According to the statement, Adams only garnered 884 givers with de Blasio marking even less at 820 givers. On the other hand, the average donation was remarkably higher, the statement said. Adams’ donations averaged about $1,000 while de Blasio’s reached $2,392.

tumblr post by userautumn: oddly enough, i feel relieved. i know now where we stand with this country. i know now that this is a nation that, despite her protestations, does not want to be saved. at this point, i am not sure she can be anyway. but what i do know is that there are people here who still need protecting. there are disabled people here, trans people here, pregnant people here, brown and black people here, queer people here, and as long as my feet rest on american soil, those people are my family and they are worth protecting. so, like, maybe this nation doesn't want to be saved. that's fine. trump and his friends can have whichever parts they lay claim to. but they can't have us. so. if you have breath in your lungs, you're my people, you're my family and i am going to fight for you for as long and as hard as i can. that's all i've got at the moment. we'll figure out the rest together, okay?
