I understand that you want to have a conversation about the representation of black men working in film. But this deal has wide ranging implications for EVERY writer in the film industry. He is knocking down a door that has been locked against the workers for decades. It is very impressive.

This deal is going to make him rich. If you look at the examples from the UK of people who retained their rights (like JK Rowling or Andrew Loyd Webber) this is the kind of deal that gives artists and creators a financial lifeline. This is exceptional and I hope more people do the same.

I work in the industry, I’m a union member that walked the picket lines with the WGA 2 years ago, and I’m friends with a number of writers and show runners. So…while I am not an expert on Black Filmmaking, I do know what the writers by in large are up against.

As a film worker and Union member, I would love to see the rights handed back to the creators.

Again, that is extremely rare and unusual at this point in filmmaking. Just because it has happened for a handful of famous directors does not mean it is anywhere close to the norm in the US. This deal is HIGHLY unusual given the stranglehold that the Executives have in Hollywood. So Good for him.

This is somewhat unheard of in the US. in the UK original writers can retain the ownership of their product. But in the US, you almost always sign it over to the studio. This is a BIG DEAL. I say good for him and I hope other directors follow suit.

Interestingly @bsky.app has decided that the Star Card is sexual content. I have of course appealed this. Censorship comes in many forms…this is one of them.
