Reactivating the Georgetown Branch for rails alongside an existing trail was not easy. Despite numerous setbacks and delays, the Puple Line is on track to finally open in late 2027!

Between Bethesda and Silver Spring, the line uses the Georgetown Branch, a former freight right-of-way turned trail, creating a new mixed-used transportation corridor.

One of the reasons BART was built to broad gauge was for trains to safely manage the bay’s high winds while crossing! #BuildtheQueensLink

Fun Fact: This line was almost part of BART, before Marin County opted out of the project in May 1962. Trains would’ve run via Geary Boulevard and the lower level of the Golden Gate Bridge across the bay and up to Santa Rosa.
