This rules! I hope they post even more of them. Super helpful to have an L style map that highlights the bus routes that serve a particular neighborhood.

I might be a bit lucky on that front. I also don't ride nearly the mileage that Eric does: I'm probably at around 3000 miles on my bike in 4.5 years and he hits a lot more than that in a single year.

And on how often you have to do maintenance! I haven't touched my brakes on my disc brake bike since I got it in September 2021

Welcome to the disc brake world, it's nice here!

Deadnaming popes is a form of sedavacantism. In this essay, I will

Don't think I've ever been as stressed about missing a train as the first time I used Clybourn.
UPN is already confusing what with running trains on the left, and then you add extra tracks to make it even worse, plus it was a weekend night so any mistake would cost 2 hours.

If you're a widower, you're allowed to become a priest. This was the case with the priest at the church I went to growing up. He often was going around the country giving talks about his experience as someone who had been both married and part of the priesthood, as this is quite rare.

Nearly 40 years of service is impressive!

I think maybe we need to study the ways of Joey Chestnut so that our stomachs can expand to a great volume when needed

I think we did the best we could. Hard to think of better way to consume calories as quickly as possible than eating really good deep dish

What's in first place?

Hell yeah brother, Moby Dick rules. I should have known based on how much I enjoyed reading Bartleby the Scrivener in a high school English class that Melville's longer work would be a very good time. I should have read it sooner!

Agree on annexing/liberating them, but then can we liberate ourselves by having Illinois join eastern time?

I'm interested!

I'd settle for Amtrak just running an extra train or two per day down there, especially on Fridays and Sundays. Loads of people from Champaign/Carbondale go up to Chicago for the weekend.

Feels a bit like the right saying "if you release the Epstein files to hurt Trump, it'll hurt Bill Clinton, too." That's not a problem, it's a bonus!

One of the keys to simplifying this is that there are only a few places where a transfer really makes sense:
1. Line termini to other lines and vice versa (i.e. brown kimball to blue Jeff park/ belmont)
2. stations immediately before/after interlining, like Halsted, king dr, Garfield on green

Which has led to me also working on writing software to plan a cta speedrun
November 25, 2025 at 5:02 PM
I've planned routes out using maps and schedules a few times. I really wish cta's official printed schedules listed all runs rather than just vague headway intervals because it requires using gtfs or tons of calls to a transit routing engine to get precise times.
November 25, 2025 at 5:01 PM
Not really, because the travel times between the nodes are not constants; they vary based on the transit schedules. Transit speed run routing is effectively a TSP with a time-varying cost graph

I learned the word "oubliette" from that being the name of the final level in Metroid Prime Hunters

People who are genuinely interested in the science of lifting would be much better served by reading the body of work by Greg Nuckols and co at Stronger By Science than by watching Mike Israetel. They do lean more towards info for powerlifting than bodybuilding which is also a plus imo

I do kinda want renumber the south side streets. It's maddening that we went through the trouble of renaming/numbering all our streets once, but didn't apply the "800 addresses= 1 mile" for the first 3 miles south of Madison like we did everywhere else
