A common example of resistance: The patient jumping from one topic to a less upsetting one. The role of the dynamic psychotherapist is not to disabuse the patient of this ambivalence but rather attempt to understand its psychological function.

Defense refers to an intrapsychic process; resistance refers to the interaction with the therapist, and is expressed in the transference.

It is odd that so many people see psychoanalytic therapy as an endless, intellectual rehashing of one’s childhood experiences when, in fact, one of its core assumptions concerns the emotional power of the here-and-now therapeutic relationship.

In order to listen deeply to another in the attuned way a therapist needs to listen, we have to quiet ourselves down inside…There is no way to quickly get over the anxiety of occupying the role of therapist. It takes “time in the chair” - lots of it.

Good training doesn’t provide all of the answers, although it certainly helps to organize and assimilate information better. Good training really shows up when clinicians don’t have the answers. Handling the unexpected is what therapy is often about.
"Therapists know that when they go in the room, there is a lot of shit that happens that they didn't figure out beforehand and they aren't sure what to do about. The activity is fraught with ambiguity and that's not going away."
