live service games are completely parasitic and designed entirely to suck as much money out of you as they can, and the only real barrier to entry for any live service game is "how comfy are you with the level of brazenness with which this company is going to siphon cash from you forever"

"but the community" what community. do you actually go to mmos to speak to other people. do you actually choose to dunk your face in the sea of unfettered id that is mmo communities. it's a hell built entirely out of people jonesing for their next dopamine hit off a loot table or gacha roll

graphics of content released in Current Year looks like low-end ps2 garbage. miserable scraps of recursive, timewasting filler content takes months or years to develop and ships with idiotic dev choices/outright broken code that either take years to fix or are just left to rot

and none of the content in these games are that good either. the writing is stale rote garbage. gameplay is soporifically robotic and unimaginative, to the point where you could automate the full gameplay loop with fucking keyboard macros for most live service games

f2p live service games are also evil but in a different way. shit like warframe will be technically free but make everything a repetitive mindnumbing slog and thoroughly waste your time, all to lean on you to pay for boosters and timesavers. with those, the game becomes almost enjoyable

subscription games are the most obvious example. pay for the base game. pay for each expac. pay a subscription to access all that other stuff you already paid for. then waste 90% of your subscription doing mindless menial shitwork to get a fraction of the stuff in the expac. time wasting to the max
