WIP Wednesday from my past lives fields of mistria fanfic. I just liked how this chapter start came out so far :)

“Kiliaen.” His mother’s voice as she softly spoke his name left no room for argument. The statement that preceded it was an edict, not a request. One he knew he could not escape without drastic measures that he didn’t dare commit to. It had only been a matter of time. He knew this, yet it didn’t make the situation any better.
The crackling of the hearth behind his parents filled the stunned silence after they made clear to him what they wanted. He will be apprenticing under the Oracle. He will take this duty seriously and he will stop with the foolishness with Mattie. That last part stung the most. His parents knew how much that friendship meant to him. They knew she was one of the few beacons of light in his sheltered life. She was the glimpse beyond the walls. The vibrant pigments that filled the canvas of the passing days. Without her…
He never wanted to consider it.
So instead he must simply bargain. Any amount of time with her, any escape away from his certain servitude to the order was better than being forever locked away amongst the dusty shelves of scrolls. Even those that lived to read and learn needed reprieve occasionally. He liked to work with his hands as much as his mind. To feel, to breathe, to live freely and fully. That is what mattered.

A wip wednesday I suppose from my past lives Fields of Mistria fic that has been tentatively named "On My Way to You" in my notes but subject to change lmao

Her fingers trembled as she read and reread the notice pinned to the wall outside Kiliaen’s office, a repeat of the speech from the day before. “They blame me…” Mattie trailed off, her eyes darting between him and the piece of paper.
“I don’t know about that…”
“They do!” Clenching her fists, the Dragonsworn closed her eyes tight. Her hair fell in front of her eyes as she inhaled deeply. “You weren’t there for my audience with them. They said they had been far too lax with me. Granted me too much freedom. Too much distraction from my duty.” As she listed each off, he knew what his parents had alluded to. Not just the freedom to cross between worlds but also the freedom to bind herself not just to Caldarus but to him as well. A sticking point for years now despite the dragon’s blessing and command. “Kiel, if I don’t fix this, I’ll be stripped of everything and cast out.”
“They can’t do that.”
“You don’t think they’d try?”
That made him pause for a moment. Kiliaen didn’t enjoy thinking ill of them but he knew where their true loyalties rested. “I know my parents aren’t always the most agreeable but…”
“You know they value the order more than me. I’m nothing more than a pawn.”
He frowned but couldn’t deny her claim. Couldn’t deny that he’d felt the same himself. His parents were always more proud of his achievements within the order than anything else. They cared little for anything he did on his own, for no reason other than he desired it. It was made clear those were selfish needs and wants from a young age. So instead of refuting it, he took a deep breath.

His heart broke as he looked at her. She’d become so small since the day before, her vibrancy had been dulled even despite the renewed hope the essence pools had granted her, however small. He wasn’t sure just how many more blows her psyche could take before she crumpled beneath the weight of expectation. So, because he had no immediate words or plan, he took her in his arms and held her tight.
“We’ll figure something out, dear heart.” He placed a kiss on her brow. “But no matter what, I choose you. I choose us. Together we can find a way.”
He could feel the way she smiled softly against his collarbone where she had tucked her head. “That’s nearly heresy, love.”
Laughing slightly, he squeezed her gently. “Then so be it. They can cast me out at your side.”
Mattie half-heartedly smiled. “I don’t want to make you do that.”
“You’re not making me do anything, love.” He pulled her into a hug, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “It’s not a choice when I know I’d always choose you. Choose us.”

The bells of the cloister tower were deafening as they rang their final toll. Everyone could feel the change in the air when it had begun. It was as if the world had become muted, its colors dulled.
And still Kiliaen worked.
If history was going to pivot so drastically—as it so often does, the rise and fall of civilizations were nothing new—he’d do everything he could to ensure their stories would be preserved. If not for himself, then for the time that surely their deity would be restored.
In this central room of the temple, he would store the many scrolls that would outline their history, their rituals, their practices. He would take his time. However much time it would take to ensure they were properly protected, the sigils on them correctly placed and magicked. It was imperative that this knowledge reached those in the future that they could trust.
With care, he stuck his index finger in the magicked pot of ink, drawing the strokes he became so familiar with during training, that he was told he would probably never need to use. The practice sheets from way back then had been destroyed, as had been common practice, which added another layer to this out of body experience. When one imagined the end of the world as they knew it, he assumed they did not think they would be hunched over religious and historical texts. But if he were honest with himself, he had no other place he’d rather be.
At least under the circumstances.
There were a couple places he’d rather be. One that no longer existed. At least not corporeally. The other was who-knows-where probably combating the intense physical symptoms of the severing of a mental bond. His finger shook as that thought flitted through his mind and he paused. The ink running on the parchment, its edges growing hazy, the stroke much too wide.

Against her better judgment, she spit at him.

“Cute, but also wrong.” He adjusted his grip on her so that one hand pinned both of hers above her head against the trunk of the tree. His now free hand wiped his face then covered her mouth. “Unfortunately, a bitch must be muzzled. I’ll ask one more time, then give you a chance to cooperate. Understand?”

Glaring, she nodded.

“Good girl. This is your final chance. Tell— Fuck!“

Her teeth clamped into the meat of his palm, breaking the skin and when he jumped back, she dove for her dagger. Immediately, she took a defensive stance, wary of the man before her.

“You bit me!” Astarion shook his hand as if that would rid him of the wound. “Hells, if you’re into that kind of thing, you only had to tell me.” Licking his lips, he smiled devilishly as if he savored her savagery. His eyes were sharp as they peered down at her, all sharp angles and blood red. Her heart pounded.

“Trust me, I’m not. Not unless I’m the one biting.”

“Oh, don’t knock it ‘til you try it, darling.”

Sarynna squinted, her words dripping with sarcasm. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

“There, civil conversation. Can we try again?” He put his hands on his hips. “Frankly, whatever your past, it doesn’t change that you’re one of the more sickeningly kind people I’ve had the displeasure of interacting with. I just need to know who I’m working with and if you can perform at full capacity, all the better. We don’t have the luxury of presenting or best selves. Time is against us.”

Shaking her head, Sarynna’s eyes flitted about while she considered his words. It’s not as if being kind has entirely endeared her to the vampire. She noticed his annoyance when she went out of her way to help people, no matter how small. Perhaps this could work in her favor. Perhaps he’d find a kindred spirit if he knew the truth and that was something she could use to her advantage.

“I thought you already gave me my final chance?”

“I’m feeling generous.”

Her hands roam over the cloth of his robes and he curses them. His skin demands to be touched properly without the dulling effect of the fabric and he acquiesces, willing it to fade out of existence, it spilling off of him in dark aether. If Keaira objects, she does not react thusly instead her motions growing far more greedy as her fingers trace the muscles of his back, nails gently scratching across his flesh. He growls at the sensation, teeth nipping at her lips.

His body reacts in ways it hasn’t in countless years. He can feel his arousal grow and while before he thinks he would have felt repulsed, instead he feels anticipation, desire. It dawns on him that he wants this.

And it terrifies him.

But not as much as the fact that she seems to desire it as well. Her back arches against him, pressing her sex against his leg grinding just right causing her to moan, chest rumbling in pleasure. The sound, the feeling of it causes a feral part of him to surge within.

His fist grasps her dark locks, fingers tangling, pulling just enough to elicit a gasp from her soft lips. Azure eyes are held tightly shut as her face shows a mix of pain and pleasure, the clash of sensations stimulating her, pushing her to the edge. Still, he continues to rut against her as she spreads her legs, cunt exposed to him and panting as if she were a beast in heat to be bred. Such acts would be considered abhorrent in Amaurot. How far has the world fallen? How far has he fallen?

At this moment, he is not Elidibus, Emissary. He is a man fallen prey to instinctual need, led by the whims of his flesh. A flesh that has spent way too long being denied it’s desires. But who is here to police him? None are left. It is only him.

So in solitude, he is cast from the heavens and plummets to the earth to spend eternity amongst the mortals.

“Not like that, Evie.” He scowled down at her but his scowls no longer held power over her and she ignored it, instead reaching up to fix his bandanna and brush his bangs out of his eyes.
“I don’t know. I think we’re going to give Elsie the wrong impression. We’ll be the source of even further salacious rumors.”
“Never mind. I take it back. Have fun on Celine’s couch.”
“Aw, don’t be like that. I’d love to spend the night. Or nights. How long did this say it would take?”
“About a week or so.”
“Damn.”
“Is there something wrong with that?”
“I’m going to get to talk about so many rocks with Olric.”
Huffing, he crossed his arms. “And what about me?”
“Jealous? Don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of time for you too.”
“There better.”
“My grumpy blacksmith will be properly attended to, don’t worry.” Before glancing down at the quote again, she kissed him on the cheek. “This seems reasonable enough. I can gather the hardwood from the deep woods. Those trees grow like weeds, I swear. If we need more copper or iron, I can get that too.”
“Ore is handled. We have plenty.”
“Good, good.” She hummed. “A week or so? Starting… after the festival about? So day after tomorrow?”
“That’s the plan if you sign off.”
“And if I don’t?”
He shrugged. “Your suffering I suppose.”
“Then I suppose I must.” Smiling, she looked up at him. “By the way, I didn’t know you had a spare room.”
Sheepishly, he looked away. “Oh, I don’t.”
“Scandalous! Just one bed between the two of us?”
Heat rushed through his cheeks. “Don’t start that again.”
“But my virtue!”
“Evie…”
She grabbed his hand with a tongue in teeth smile. “I’m teasing. C’mon, let’s go tell the dynamic carpentry duo they’ve got a job on their hands.”

Trying to brainstorm a plot summary which is *madness* because I'm usually a "I'll figure it out when I post chapter one" girlie but here I am, far too invested in this nonsense lmao

Visions of a different life, different people, different connections, but he has never understood the significance of them until Kira, Mistria’s newest resident, arrived with eyes that had haunted his dreams. Now he’s connecting the dots between past and present, finding his soul more settled than ever, and getting answers to questions he never realized he had. Perhaps they weren’t just visions of the past but of a past life. His own.
In the past, Kiliaen struggled with his duties as the Caldosian Oracle, feeling the weight of its mantle heavy on his shoulders but at least he had the loves his life, the Dragonsworn and her sworn Dragon at his side. But when disaster strikes and Caldarus, is sealed away, it starts a chain of events that have repercussions, not just in their lives but in their future lives as well.
Working together, the past and present must find the culprit and fully release Caldarus from his chains so they can set the world to rights again.

Before he could respond, she plunged the sword infused with hers and Caldarus’ essence into the prepared slot and it begun. A great rush of wind flooded the room, carrying with it the familiar scent of sandalwood and citrus mixed with the smell of her. The same scent that he woke up to every day since they were wed. The comforting aroma of home. He watched as her eyes rolled back into her head as her chin lifted, raising her face towards the ceiling of the cavern and she fell to her knees, panting heavily.
Instinctively he took a step forward and her head snapped back to face him as she shouted with unseeing eyes, their entirety taken up by that viciously and otherworldly bright lavender color. “No! Do not come closer. You could get swept into the spell.”
He could feel wet running down his cheeks as he sniffed. “Would that be so bad? We could do this together.”
“You might not officially be the Oracle anymore but we still need you. You must record the past. You must keep watch on the present and future. I think we’ll need every boon possible when the time comes. Be brave. For me. For us.”
To his horror, as she spoke her form began to fade starting from where her hands gripped the sword tight, spreading up her arms and down her torso. He released a shuddering gasp, feeling himself fall to his hands and knees as he watched. “But what if I’m not strong enough?”
A lop-sided smile spread across her face as it too began to disappear. “Oh, my love. You have always been so brave. You have always been strong. Your heart has been the strongest of us all and that’s why it must be you. Keep faith in what you’ve seen. We will be reunited beneath the cerulean sky to run across the verdant forests hand in hand again. Never forget, dear heart, our love for you.”

As the final words rang out with an ethereal echo, Mathilda, the Dragonsworn, the love of his life disappeared from the mortal plane and all he could do was watch as his tears darkened the dirt and stone, the air thicker with essence than it had been before.
He hardly parsed the sounds of the Witch Queens entering the room. Didn’t recognize the shuffling of their robes as they brought in the enchanted tablet humming with power and placed it on the altar behind the sword, now sheathed in the earth. The weight of a hand on his shoulder barely had the power to pull him from his despair, only enough to pick him up off his knees and guide him out of the cave and back into the sun where even its warmth couldn’t reach the chill in his bones.
When he arrived back home, to their empty, lonely cottage, he sat at his desk and opened his diary and wrote. Wrote of his loves now locked away, wrote of their strength and bravery and wisdom. He drew their likenesses on tear-stained parchment. He wrote of himself and his duty, for he is the Oracle and record-keeper and he loved them both, so he would make sure their memory endured for ages to come. He would ensure the future where they were reunited would come to pass with all the power he possessed.
With a sigh, he closed the diary then took a deep breath before extending a hand to dim the oil lamp. If this was his duty, he would see it through and there was much to do, much to come. Standing, he picked up the lamp and crossed the room setting it on his nightstand as he sat down on the bed and for the first time in a long time, he bid the visions to come and haunt his dreams.

NOTE: This fic is dual timeline featuring the past lives of the Farmer (Mathilda / Dragonsworn) and Eiland (Kiliaen, Kiel for short / the Oracle). In this snippet specifically, Mathilda plans to seal herself alongside Caldarus' stray essence with the help of the Witch Queens to ensure his essence doesn't fade completely into the void and out of existence. This is hers and Kiel's final moments before that happens.

my writing style is getting stuck on one random key phrase or word that a character said and making an absurd scene out of it. This chapter featured "hard boiled eggs".

Happy to oblige, she grabbed a second as soon as she popped the rest of the first egg in her mouth, eager to get peeling. She was just getting started when she heard a sleepy grunt from behind them and the pair turned to look, cheeks full of egg.
March stood in the doorway, his jaw slack as he stared at them. Then with a heavy sigh, he muttered, “I’m going to bed where hopefully this nightmare will end.”
However, Olric was unperturbed. “Aw, bro. We’re just having breakfast. Eggs are good!”
“Yeah, March, eggs are good.”
Running a hand down his face, he entered the kitchen more fully. “Olric has no excuses but if you knew the atrocities against eggs I’ve seen in this kitchen, then you’d understand, Evie.”
