He also said that Liverpool created much more than both Chelsea and palace in those two games and deserved to win but fine margins. Hopefully that means he hasn’t recognised the issues and so won’t fix them

While I completely agree with the fact that this is barbaric and a ridiculous punishment, you have to wonder why he ended up in Indonesia with $400 worth of cannabis given their laws. Does he not have a manager or even any friends who might say “yeah don’t take cannabis there, they’ll kill you”?

No, I think you’re misreading what I said but Pope’s touch is after Gyokeres touches the ball, but before he clatters Gyokeres. If there were such a rule that the ball brushing the top of his boot despite him not knowing anything about it negates a penalty then this seems a correct use of var.

Well no, if any touch (deliberate or otherwise) invalidates the foul, then this touch is clear and so they should get involved. I don’t think that’s the rule and so I do think the VAR should not have got involved.

In my opinion Pope is attempting to plant his foot in order to block where the ball is going, which is why Gyokeres has to make the touch which changes the direction of the ball prior to the ball touching pope. He’s not playing the ball the ball grazes his toe on the way past. That’s a penalty.

Yeah, I’d agree that his foot is not planted when it makes contact with the knee. It then plants as it makes contact. I’d also agree that Sanchez’s contact was the natural follow through of an attempt to play the ball. In my opinion Pope is not attempting to move his know forward into Gyokeres.

On the other hand I don’t think this has been the rule, see Chelsea vs United last week to name just one that doesn’t include us from this season and so I don’t think that is the rule at all.

I think I might be in the minority here, and for certain, in real time I thought it was one, but if the rule is now that getting the ball first means it is not a pen, then this does seem like it is a reasonable use of VAR. there is clearly a touch and the referee missed it.
