'Showy milkweed' is actually fairly common along the Wasatch Front in Utah. The plant pictured grows beside my garage. The uncommon varieties grow in the "Basin and Range" desert and nearer to Nevada or further south. A month ago, further down on my feed, there's a pic of the much rarer one.
