We’re still keen to tell the white working class that all that book learning and fancy ideas at university is not for them and what they need to do is an apprenticeship in plumbing. Heaven forbid they might have dreams above their station.

I wonder, with no real evidence, if the white working class have long been taught by the middle classes and the ruling classes that learning is essentially bad for them. People more recently settled have not had centuries of this drilled in so feel more positively about the benefit of education.

Yes - such timorous behaviour although in general those papers are supportive of the right wing so right wing politicians have never felt the need to tackle the lies and misinformation I suppose and would all cry ‘but free speech!’ if the left ( or any one basically decent) tried..
