🚨THE LAST JEDI IS SCREENING IN LONDON WITH A RIAN JOHNSON INTRO ON 9 OCTOBER 🚨

There are still tickets available for this! It's really gone under the radar, but is probably the event of the year for any London (or even UK) based Reylos - go and snap those tickets up while they're still available!

Okay while I can't make the screening of TLJ, I've just booked a ticket to the Knives Out double bill on the Friday w/ Rian Johnson Q&A. I couldn't be more excited!

This is the most wholesome canon Ben Solo content ... perhaps ever? Great art.

Was in central London at the weekend and a very sweet tourist stopped me to ask if I could direct her to 'Shaftesbury' (meaning 'Shaftesbury Avenue') - it was probably the most American moment I've experienced directly in years.

Aargh that really is so difficult! Hope you can make it work but if not I'm sure all the notable comments will be shared online.

Hope you can go! We need some Reylos on the ground.

Thank you! I'll experiment with that later.

Had a blast at the Ridley Scott Q&A at the BFI - he's breathtakingly egotistical, but so intensely sincere that he's likeable. Highlights:

- praising his own films at every opportunity
- calling Pauline Kael a bitch (twice!)
- recalling Orson Welles drinking pepsi cola and eating chocolate cake

@sleemo.com I know you can't go in person, but this will be of interest to you!

Unfortunately I can't attend as I'm at the theatre that evening, but I really hope some of my moots can go! It's such a fantastic opportunity to see Rian introduce the movie - I'd love see a write-up on what he has to say in his intro.

I think what this back and forth is really revealing is how incredibly subjective this all is - what strikes me as moving and resonant is registering as phoney and unearned to you. There's not a right or wrong to that - it just means we're both having different experiences of the same piece of art.
rachael1918.bsky.social
It is a similar emotional state in TFA, but it evolves in radically different directions across the subsequent films. Luke's compassion for Vader is based on the primal bond he feels with his father. Rey's affinity for Kylo is developed through shared feelings of isolation and rejection.
rachael1918.bsky.social
Whether that storytelling choice works for you is going to be subjective, but it's built up throughout TLJ - we get extensive groundwork to Rey having her binary view of things shattered, and her turmoil upon realising Kylo has been more honest with her than Luke. I find the shift entirely earned.
rachael1918.bsky.social
That gets to another key difference - the motivators for characters like Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are almost purely political. They're following the orders of the Jedi Order or the Senate - the sequel characters are ruled by their emotions and instincts. Personally, I find the latter more interesting.
