Hey! It's midnight on the east coast, so it's release day. Thanks to @undertow.bsky.social for being such a fantastic publisher. Thanks to family, friends, and fellow writers for their support. The short fic grind has ups and downs, but it's a blast. Fricken love what we do. Thanks for reading.
A pile of Uncertain Sons, just a lot of uncertainty and a lot of sons

We need your support in the next 3 days, before the fall of eternal night. Help us breathe new stories that keep us alive, each word and phrase building the monster’s body, the one who rends and tears and protects us from darkness. kck.st/4mIkEm1
A strange creature lurks upright in the colorful darkness, along with the 3LBE icon and cover artwork.

Looks like another "a genre I don't read sucks lol" discourse is happening, so I'll just say this: Every single genre has its unique enjoyments and wisdom to impart, whether or not it's a genre that you personally enjoy or gravitate toward. Once you realize this, the world becomes a lot more fun!

YES. Romance as a genre requires an incredible amount of technique. And I think the more "formulaic" a genre is, the more true this becomes. Like how the very rigidity of sonnets and haiku demand greater innovation
rachaelkjones.bsky.social
THIS!!!! I am nodding so hard it hurts!!!

I've recently been revisiting big, loud action movies, and appreciating how the genre is all about power dynamics and the refusal to surrender, even in the face of impossible odds. It's about more than explosions and punching things! (although it's also about explosions and punching things!)

People who sandbag on litfic will miss out on how lific is uniquely interested in painting a complex psychological picture of its subjects. People who diss romance will miss out on how romance authors are absolute MASTERS of character.

When I run across a genre or subgenre that doesn't grab me, I've started asking myself, "What is it about this type of story that draws in so many readers?" And the answer always, ALWAYS challenges me to level up my own craft and understand a different perspective on the world

25 years of fiction: 3LBE and I came on the scene in the same year. Our community would be lesser without them. so let's get them across this finish line. We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there. Contribute $25 or more, share your receipt with me, I'll send you a signed book. 🔥👁️🔥

Lots of discussion lately about increased interest in short fiction, and we love that. We have 25 years of horror, dark fantasy, and science fiction stories for you to read. And we would love to do 25 more, if you can help. kck.st/4mIkEm1

An Amtrak guy whose nametag read "Beans" told us train jokes on the intercom and kept the vibes calm until the tracks were cleared again -- but hey, sometimes life imitates art! Shame it was too late to put Beans in my story though
rachaelkjones.bsky.social
Fun fact: several weeks after writing this, while on the way to WorldCon, I ended up on a train we eventually dubbed "the Murder Train" when we stopped for 3 hours on account of an active shooter on the tracks several miles away
