Hungry historian. Novelist. Vancouver Island dweller. I post a lot about old books I'm reading, and sometimes new ones. Also art and nature shots. I avoid posting about politics because what the fuck's the point. You know what I think.

Funny. Germans only get 1 bird in either scenario. English speakers at least get a chance at doubles. Spanish speakers get 100x. It’s clear which culture I’d want to be part of.

in conversation with a German friend, learned that the German version of "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush," is "a sparrow in the hand is worth a dove on the roof." what do you do with the sparrow in your hand, though?

Any Philadelphia historians out there who can point me to good sources for understanding Philadelphia highlife culture in the immediate post-Civil War era? late 1860s and early 1870s? I'm particularly interested in any info on the Moyamensing Balls

This is a sweet silly book that I hope will make readers laugh and feel the feels. It provided some much needed respite in the writing, as I hope it will in the reading.

Is there anyone who would buy this dish soap because it promises “50% less scrubbing”? Genuine question of a compulsive reader who can’t stop reading even while washing dishes. (Confession: the bf bought this dish soap for me at the dollar store, based, I think, on price and its upside-down design)
