Excerpt of the same Toronto Star article reads:

"I have communicated to Mr. Engler, as well as to other individuals who have expressed interest in running, that they are strongly advised to wait for official approval from the Leadership Vote Committee before making any public pronouncements, in order to avoid confusion. In addition, it has been recommended that prospective campaigns not accept contributions prior to re eiving approval, as such contributions are not tax-receiptable and would be in violation of the leadership rules, which require all donations to be processed through the NDP."
"While we have not been sharing the status of candidacy to date in order to respect privacy and confidentiality, it is not acceptable to be misleading about approval status. Mr. Engler has suggested that he has not yet been approved, but the fact is that he has not submitted an application," Hébert-Daly added. The deadline to enter the race and pay the $100,000 entry fee is Jan. 31.

Installing someone like Bari Weiss as the head of a major news organization isn’t even about profit or longevity. In effect it’s about continuing to shrink the traditional news industry smaller and smaller and weaker and weaker and less and less journalism based until it ceases to exist

Hopefully the whole Bari Weiss thing and Ezra Klein thing starts waking people up to the fact that corporate media is mostly populated with mediocre people who have made millions and gained unbelievable influence because they threaten nothing and tell wealthy people exactly what they want to hear.

I’m honestly so torn about what to do about posting on X.

Like Kat makes such an important point here.

That said, in Canada at least, many important decisionmakers and public pundits exclusively scroll there — and seem to derive some understanding of public sentiment from it (terrifying, I know).

As an internet culture journalist, I think it’s important for me to continue to observe the depravity that goes viral on X, but one of the reasons I’m glad I stopped posting there is because I think it helps me avoid normalizing the rhetoric celebrating the political brutality in America right now

You might be right. But I’m not sure. And when the impact is the degradation of our democracy, it’s frustrating that we don’t know for sure whose theory on this is correct. I hope someone researches this so we can have some evidence to guide our decisions here…it’s too important to screw up

You’re of course entitled to your opinion, but I hope you’ll consider the nuance I identified in this thread.

I honestly think it’s idealistic to pretend X isn’t where most decisionmakers still primarily scroll. Until that changes, I think there have to be some dissenting voices to counter the hate

They genuinely do scroll. They DM me themselves, it’s not their staffers. There have been concerns within at least one party’s caucus about the impact of this scrolling. It’s a very real and serious phenomenon.

It’s a fair q!! I’ve seen stuff I’ve reported on Twitter result in MP statements in Parliament, and I’ve had convos with decisionmakers bc they DMed me about a post. Some of this is harder to evidence — like what influences views for talking heads.

But is that worth the harm? Really hard to say 🥲
