As someone who doesn’t drive, it was the best way for me to get a taste of Alaska. I would definitely have enjoyed spending a little more time in each place, but I don’t have a good way to do that.

August Fiction Standout #4:

The Martian Contingency by @maryrobinettekowal.com is the 4th Lady Astronaut book. I love so many of the characters and the way they learn and grow. I cried so much while reading it!

Flight Paths by @rheisman.bsky.social delves into bird migration, and how scientists have tracked it over the years and centuries. It was both informative and a pleasure to listen to.

I kind of want to see the teacher’s reaction to the completely honest family tree that shows all of that. I think teachers don’t realize how much of a potential minefield an assignment like that can be. For so many reasons. (That sucks that you felt pressured into disclosing all that to your kid.)

I have experienced the joy of suddenly being in a place where my holidays are the default holidays (gap year in Israel about 25 years ago now) but it never occurred to me to think about how it feels going in the opposite direction!

Echoing what others have said, I wonder if maybe it’s worth making sure you’ve already raised the money (whether GFM or Kickstarter or whatever) before taking the time away from the jewelry.

The Lady Astronaut series by Mary Robinette Kowal is alternate history hard SF even though I always forget it’s hard SF when I’m reading it.
