Unfortunately, our patriarchal, racist and ableist social structures devalue people based on appearance. The protectionism of ‘woman’ as category is based on a mixture of defined oppressions produced by material and social factors. Transness challenges category politics and asks for adjustments.

For some, transness can be destabilising as it triggers an anti-theatrical bias assuming an ontological deep self as the only ‘truth’. Doubleness is culturally coded as negative. Singleness is coded as authentic. But what if ‘self’ is produced through appearance. Selfing is process not category.

The second is reliant on accepting a stranger’s strangeness. Every encounter is based on a social contract with learnt codes for how to engage. We are taught to accept that people are who they appear to be, and to reserve judgement. Otherwise you have social anarchy and/or discrimination.

The first falls down if you don’t want trans people to operate openly in society. If you would prefer they be housebound and/or repressed, rejecting adjustments is a good way of ensuring this. That is not good economically, but it reinforces that being trans is undesirable.

As a thought experiment I’ll try. Two ways: medicalist-neoliberal & ontological. 1) Transition is the most successful treatment for debilitating dysphoria, with socio-legal ‘reasonable adjustments’ to ensure trans people thrive & pay tax. 2) Appearance / utterance produces & affirms social relations

It needs saying again and again. I don’t think people realise how theatre is a testbed of managerialist approaches. Trivialised as an arts practice, but requires the interpersonal skillset of a CEO!
