What you would see if Andromeda was brighter in the night sky
If the Andromeda galaxy were brighter, it would be a major feature in the night sky, visible even in cities with moderate light pollution: Huge: It would appear roughly six times larger than the moon. Dominant: It would dominate the sky and be easily identifiable every night. Visible in cities: It would be visible even in cities with moderate light pollution. The Andromeda galaxy is currently too far away to be easily seen: Distance: It's 2.5 million light years away, or about 25 Milky Way diameters. Visibility: Only the super-condensed nucleus of Andromeda is bright enough to be visible to the naked eye. Appearance: To the naked eye, the galaxy's disk appears as a fuzzy smudge about one-quarter of a degree wide.

The Andromeda Galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy and is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way. It was originally named the Andromeda Nebula and is cataloged as Messier 31, M31, and NGC 224. Andromeda has a D₂₅ isophotal diameter of about 46.56 kiloparsecs and is approximately 765 kpc from Earth.
