Circumference of the earth according to the Travels of Sir John Mandeville, written ca. 1370: 20,425 miles, only about 4,500 miles off. Not bad for a monk calculating with Roman numerals and an astrolabe.

painting of cityscape at twilight. there is a full moon surrounded by clouds in a gray night sky tinted with green. the moon and the orange light from gas lamps illuminate a cobblestone street, burnishing it with a green-and-gold glow. in the distance, you can see dark silhouettes of carriages and people. we see the left side of the street head on, so details of buildings are scant except for a wood awning. to the right, though, the exteriors of Victorian buildings are detailed - the one closest to us looks like it's made of brick. at the very end of the street is a ghostly building - probably a church tower with a spire.
