The museum is based in the R30 ops building (bottom left of the photo), now a grade 2* listed structure as a "uniquely intact electronic 'frontline' of the Cold War of international importance". The museum opened in 1994, with the rest of the former RAF Neatishead site now in private hands.🧵

From one of our volunteers: "If they are referring to the big screen at the front of Upper Ops (Weapons), the only time I saw this in use was at the morning briefings & Exercise briefings.

Yep, that's me. Pilot Officer P. Peacock.
You're probably wondering how I got here on the No.104 Fighter Controller Course at West Drayton in 1977.

Are we the coolest museum in Norfolk?
It's going to be a hot weekend so great for our solar panels, but if you're looking to escape the heat you can step into our (genuinely cold) Cold War room!

Continuing the theme of tigers, and a recent sighting at the museum, was this green tiger beetle - one of the fastest insects in the world and a mean predator at only 2cm long!
June 26, 2025 at 10:43 AM
Occasionally we see a tiger moth (like the cream spot tiger above) or more commonly it's 'woolly bear' caterpillar.
Tiger moths have an interesting association with radar, or rather sonar, as they are able to interfere with the echolocation of their main predator - bats.

It's #InsectWeek organised by the Royal Entomological Society as a celebration & recognition of these beautiful creatures so vital to the planet.
Being in the Norfolk Broads means we attract lots of different species of butterfly and dragonfly to our wildflower patch

The former RAF Neatishead is split between us, the Ministry of Defence (big white dome), Andrew Elden Designs and the Academy of Robotics.
AoR own the R30 underground bunker, the Type 84 radar (a national monument) and assorted buildings including the R12 building which used to house a Type 85.

Many RAF personnel were abroad in France, Netherlands and Germany with the 2nd Tactical Air Force, whilst some members of the mobile radar units, such as AMES 117, were as far east as Czechoslovakia.

However, for many troops they would be celebrating a long way from their families and wouldn't be home for many months yet, whilst others were being re-equipped and re-embarked to ship off to the Far East as the war with Japan continued.

Today we remember VE-Day, the end of the war in Europe in 1945.
After almost 6 years of war, the country rejoiced in finding a new peace.🧵
