A lot of the mountain shrines/temples complexes really are super RPG dungeon coded. Mount Inari has the big entrance + the all the torii gates and checkpoints. The Kotoku-in / shore area in Kamakura even has enemies that steal your healing items and equipment plushies (Black-Eared Kites).

Gets spread to their younger peers who want to fit in with as well. A lot of it is also just the plain racism of today that happens to come someone left leaning, cause the Asian minority in the U.S. is small relative to cultural presence, so there's less codified etiquette.

A lot of irony leftist types (Chapo, etc.) are middle aged millennial former Something Awful posters. They still hold a lot of the old biases from the culture wars of those days, which leads them to say some stunningly racist stuff about Japan (and other Asian cultures too TBH).
