My prediction is that this, his weird Obama affect, and his stance on charter schools are going to be the main anchors on his campaign. He can probably survive the debate stage, but he’ll get mollywhopped in the first actual votes.

I think there's a genuine small group of elites, D and R, that both like a lot of hard right policy (tough on crime, anti-trans, general ladder pulling) but also want to be seen as respectable and not raving nazi lunatics at social functions and/or on social media. Liz Cheney is another example.
