Because everything Val represents is complicated! I don't want them to back down on things just because social media exploded with backlash and anger from whiny entitled fans who don't like seeing evil they could meet in their cartoons. Portraying them doesn't validate them. Fuck this purist shit.

That's what makes Charlie's contrast and journey of the hotel worth watching! In a setting where people like Alastor [a literal cannibal], and Vox [cult leader/serial killer] are seen as thriving beloved characters, there SHOULD be a character as explored and complex as Val.
