A sleek black bird with white shoulder patches stares at the camera, its slender black beak opened to reveal a scarlet red mouth and throat. The seabird nestles on a small worn flat ledge of wave polished grey lava just its size. The loosely organized flock of guillemots are in constant motion, flying out to sea from the tidal zone rocks, then returning a half hour later to again flop around on the rocks, mewing, flapping and partying. The striking scarlet color of both mouth and feet is uniquely special in their matched splashes of color, contrasting amid the grey, black and white of their only foray upon land for a few months in early summer. The rest of the year they live out on the open ocean.

Alighting on a washed up pile of driftwood, a female marsh hawk (aka Northern Harrier) holds in its talons a balled up wad of grass it has just snatched from the riverbank meadow, hoping to feel the wiggle of a vole or mouse caught inside...

Against a backdrop of tawny field and evergreen forest, a beautifully patterned brown, white and black patterned hawk perches on a pile of driftwood, its wings upraised, standing high on it's talons which clutch a large wad of brown grass. I watched it swoop in from low over the meadow along a river estuary, clutching the wad of grass and alighting on the log. It appeared to be waiting for any wiggling motion within the ball of dead grass that might indicate a plump vole clenched inside. As another harrier came in low to investigate, she lifted off the driftwood perch, tendrils of grass still caught in her talons and trailing behind, satisfied there was nothing inside the clump which warranted further attention. Photo sequence was taken from my kayak as I drifted along, hoping desperately to capture the unfolding tableau. A bit blurry from the movement of wind and water but not bad considering how quickly it all occurred.

A good haul of plastic trash pulled off the beach of a secluded cove following a storm back in early January.
There's at least one more load in the next cove over, waiting for a day with no wind and mild surf. It might be a while, there's more weather coming in.
