We need to stop conflating empathy with respect, because if we approach lack of understanding like willful bigotry, we cause harm to people who might want to be our allies once they have all the facts.

The bigger problem is that a lot of people in power lack respect, whether they have empathy or not. A lot of people misunderstand what empathy is. It gets misinterpreted as "emotional telepathy," where you magically feel what another person is feeling and therefore know exactly how to help and comfort them. It doesn't quite work like that. Empathy is a function of mirror neurons, which are neurons that fire in response to perceiving a stimulus without experiencing it oneself. So, a person with empathy watches another person stub their toe. The empathetic person's mirror neurons fire, and therefore they feel an unpleasant sensation in their own toe. This mirror neuron activity can be observed, by doing an fMRI of the brain while showing videos of painful stimuli like stubbed toes, and then calming stimuli like puppies and kitties. Do you see the discrepancy? Empathetic people don't telepathically experience what the other person feels. They experience what they would feel if the same thing happened to them. So why is this relevant? Because, for example, if you talk to a cis person about gender-affirming surgery, and they experience empathy, they feel how it would feel to have their own boobs or dick chopped off, and they experience gender dysphoria. And if they haven't learned respect for the fact that not all humans experience things the same way, they don't recognize that a trans person experiences the opposite of what they experience with their mirror neurons. Which means the left's approach to educating about trans rights - the assumption that transphobia is driven by lack of empathy - is often fundamentally wrong. Transphobia is driven by animal-instinct empathy without learned respect. Once you know that, it changes the approach.
