The 8th Day of #October is a big one, so I decided to draw an actual octopus. Here's one of those bioluminous guys floating in the deep sea.

People are economically struggling & they're genuinely looking for help. The sleight-of-hand is pointing at someone they think is lower on the social ladder and saying, they want to take from you, burdened as you are, and not realizing how high up the ladder goes. Their "we" doesn't mean you and me.

I remember jokes about how much Taxes other countries paid, and then I grew up & realized that other places maybe don't get got as bad as we do because they know they get material returns on the taxes they pay. The whole line has been asking you to vote to cut off your own oxygen in an O2-rich pod.

I grew up in a Republican town & the thing you always heard was men on TV promising to Lower Taxes. I think the unspoken assumption was they wanted votes to do this so they could help ease the burden on your household- in reality, taxes pay for services that help you, & that's what they want to cut.

The big problem that you're gonna have with that is, if everything is stored in a big bin, how do you sort out what is AI-generated and what is not? They don't save to separate directories based on how they were created before being posted to these sites & I don't think the sites themselves check.

By the time November hits I'm gonna be real good at just freehanding an octopus from memory.

Funny story about drawing this one: I was consciously trying to do those short little strokes, but I kept accidentally making my pen strokes way too long. I think it ends up being an evolution of confidence thing, but I had to really try to chip away like this. It does feel like my old sketchbooks!

Day 7 of #October in the can. Years ago, an art friend commented how the way I drew at the time was "like chipping out a sculpture." I used to draw with these short little lines, just cha cha cha cha. Recently, a different friend said I draw big long curves so easily. I tried revisiting the old way.

Anyone who runs or pays to rent physical hosting space for media files should be alarmed that The Next Big Thing is filling their electronic garage with completely unwanted data. Files that all have a filesize, on your servers that all have data capacity, generated by people with no impulse control.

And worse still, the companies pioneering this now want to generate .mp4 files? Someone's promising a button press will create a movie media file and hundreds of millions of fingers are gonna give it a press and post it up on your data servers? You're inviting the world to come shit in your pants.

I think there is a case to be made that social media platforms & tech companies should be very rigidly opposed to GenAI if they're footing the bill for hosting data on physical servers. Like, this is a friction-free press-of-the-button to generate billions of dogshit png files you now have to host?

You can just talk to the stars in this case & they can share all kinds of insight and wisdom from a perspective that is completely outside your own. You don't need to weigh what they say against the people who think they revolve around Earth, or that they're painted on the ceiling. It's not needed.

I'd like people to see gender critics or trans skeptics attempting to describe what being trans is & why it's bad as similar to describing their experience visiting Jupiter. Like astronomers, cis ppl can study a world they'll never visit, but some crackpots insist the stars all revolve around Earth.

Here's Day 6 of #October fresh off the press. Today I made a nice print, maybe a desktop background or wall art? I think I'm starting to understand the shape of an octopus better than when I started, both in terms of how their heads fit together and how their suckers pattern around their tentacles.
