Random thought #13
There are no solutions to social problems, only actions that change them
ralphb3rd.bsky.social
It's a special kind of stupid that a lot of smart people have: they only care about the problem, not the consequences of solving it.

MEMORY: October 8, 1956, Yankees-Dodgers game 5, Don Larsen pitching for NY. The Shop class radio was on in the background, but by the 8th inning all work had stopped. We listened in silence. No Dodger had reached 1st base, and that’s how it ended – The only perfect game ever in the World Series.

Okay Tom, you got me. On order as of now.

Journalist Edward R. Murrow used his platform on CBS to criticize the witch hunts led by Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s.

This is what real journalism should do — hold power to account, not capitulate to it.

I agree. Adam, I'm a lifelong Democrat but the country needs your voice.

A lot of evangelicals seem to be more attracted to the vengeful God of the Old Testament than the forgiving God of the New.

Random thought of the week.
When I hear some of our leaders speak I'm reminded of Caliban in The Tempest

"You taught me language, and my profit on ’t
Is I know how to curse"

False attributions are a dime a dozen today (a phrase that has even more meaning than when I was a kid). I just wish people could stop throwing shit at each other and sit down and talk. Of course that's what the government's thugs are trying to stop.

Does it really say it's a PNG? Why would anyone expect anything different? The three I's? Inattention, Impulsiveness, and Ignorance.

If it's big enough to swim in, doesn't smell bad, doesn't have scum on top or nasty things floating in it, and isn't a holding pond for waste. But warm ponds and lakes can have algae and microbes that can kill you. Basically if it says "no swimming" pay attention, otherwise enjoy.

The US is going to bailout Argentina with your tariff money.

Let that sink in

How about just "Thank you"? Your tone of voice can say the rest.

We are at risk of being colonized by AI
ralphb3rd.bsky.social
Exactly. Native Americans? U.S. Place names. Steal what you want and trash the rest.
ralphb3rd.bsky.social
So many of the things that we create to interpret reality to suit are needs are potentially susceptible to AI's algorithmic manipulation and thus control. But it should at least give us credit for what it takes from us.
ralphb3rd.bsky.social
You're right. But the most disturbing thing about AI is that it has mechanized the process of cultural change. If you speak English you are using words from many different languages spoken by colonized people and trading partners. Our myths, stories, even art have deep roots in antiquity.
ralphb3rd.bsky.social
No. They're creating it. And before long the world for the vast majority of people who spend most of their lives on line will be what AI says it is if only because so many people aren't willing to take the trouble to dig deeper.
