1980 or so, I took a trip to the UK. Sometimes I'd be asked where I was from. When I said, "Chicago," often the response was a pantomime of machine guns and sounds of "rat atat atat."

It got really old, really fast.

The picture above is of French aristocrats. Tom was the scion of a middle class family. It seems unlikely he would have white washed a fence dressed in such frippery.

But if not overalls, what would he have worn?
