I'm nerdy about books, writing, words, cooking, science, nature, science-fiction, tabletop gaming, hiking, and fragrances. #ologite

KHAMRAH QUAWAH (Lattafa)

I keep looking for the perfect cozy rich winter scent and rememered I had a bit of this one. It's rich and ambery, with deeply browned caramel and coffee notes. One of the only 2 Lattafas I kind of like.

AMBER & ROSEWOOD (Maison Label)

The longer I wear this, the more I like its cozy gothic-style rich ambery vanilla presence. There's no real rosewood or wood here, but it's nice in its simplicity nonetheless. It's even inexpensive but, alas, difficult to get in the States. #frangrancesky

MALT (Akro):

This reminds me of when my last molars were coming in as a teen and I used Orajel on my gums. It tasted and smelled like old shoe leather and rum, as this smells. Plus, this has a hint of burnt caramel and sweet cardboard. I'm gonna pass this on.

QUEEN OF THE NIGHT (Merchant of Venice)

Inspired by the ancient Egyptian temple incense, Kiphy. It's leathery sweet amber. My daughter smelled Krispie Kremes from across the room. Reminds me of Khamrah. Too gourmand for my normal tastes. #fragrancesky #perfumesky

AKKAD (Lubin)

Inspired by Sargon of Akkad who conquered much of Mesopotamia. The opening is cola, quickly turning to gorgeous woods and resins with a hint of powder.

PURPLE HAZE (19-69)

Got this complete cliche through a mystery swap, and it's hypnotically interesting. I wouldn't wear it in public, but wow. Earthy patchouli, resins, greenery, petrichor, and a eucalyptus-like note that's probably ravensara. Oddly craveable.

HALFETI LEATHER (Penhaligon's)

I've been wanting to try the OG Halfeti, but this was the one that ended up in a traveling swap box recently instead. I mainly get oud, labdanum, and plum. I might see if my husband likes it, but it's not really doing it for me. #fragrancesky #perfumesky

1957 EDP (Chanel)

This was an instant love and must have, with aldehydes that effervesce like Coke bubbles, powdery orris, light orange blossom, and creamy musk. I don't like lots of Chanels, but this one is gorgeous and crowd-pleasing. #fragrancesky #perfumesky

I have a thing for gothic literature and gothy fragrances. One fragrance that smells really gothic to me is LOULOU by Chacherel. Anise & iris hit first. Initially, it smells old-fashioned, but then it deepens with plum & incense, becoming creamy & powdery. What's w/ the bottle though? #fragrancesky

VANILLE FATALE (Tom Ford)

This is such a soothing woody night time scent, with hints of richer notes like tobacco and plum hiding out in the background. However, the wood only smells right in cooler weather.

MISS DIOR PARFUM

I've passed on Miss Diors so many times, but this one is different: rich, dark, creamy, and berry fruity. It's still on the generic side, but I kind of like it. For when you want to smell like a department store version of a goth: goth light.

UN JARDIN SUR LE NIL (Hermes)

This one's growing on me, but it needs a sunny day. It's happy citrus dish soap, lotus, hyacinth, and musk and reminds me of my granny's kitchen in summer.

Thank goodness I don't smell veggies.

VAMPIRE HUSBAND (Sorce)

He added cloves to his coffin, but it still smells like dirt and mildew when he awakens, puts on his leather jacket, and takes a swig of absinthe to begin his nighttime morning.

Interesting experience, but I'm gonna pass.

LILYPHÉA (Diptyque)

The creamy aquatic green notes, aldehydes, and water lily here are gorgeous and elegant. It was an instant love and doesn't remind me of anything else I've ever smelled. I would also love this as a candle. I want everything to smell like this.

DANDELION BUTTER (Clue)

I am one with the outdoor greenery. While it's not the honey sweet dandelions in our yard that the bees love so much, it's still a nice green note, almost wandering into green apple territory.

502 IRIS CARTAGENA

The opening smells exactly like my chocolate mint plants, but it then adds a slightly sweet note and cedar. So, it becomes chocolate mint growing underneath a cedar tree (mine is under an oak). Sadly, no iris, but it's still lovely and unique.

SIREN'S VEIL (Tomavicci)

A great name, great bottle, and high price doesn't guarantee greatness. Everything here smells cheap and fake: peach, plum, benzoin, sandalwood. It's not bad but just smells like a cheap bedtime scent. Alas.

GIRL OF NOW (Elie Saab)

When you fall in love with a flanker before smelling the original, the original can be disappointing. I mean, it's nice, but it's missing the pineapple, iris, and patchouli that makes Girl of Now Shine a top 5 for me. Tonka isn't as fluffy.

PORTUGUESE MAN O' WAR

Zoologist is always a questionable experience. A gunpowder- & seaweed-covered warlord is taking a shower by the ocean with Coast and Zest soap. There's a barrel of gasoline nearby. Sniffing the air seems dangerous but weirdly addictive.

DISPELLED (d.grayi)

This one's amazing in cold weather, & is the essence of coziness. You're wrapped in a warm blanket that's been stored with a sachet of lavender & other herbs, & you're drinking Earl Grey tea while reading an old book smelling of warm vanilla.

SCANDALWOOD (Heretic)

I didn't like this in hot weather, but it's perfect now that it's cool. What strikes me most is the real sandalwood note, bolstered by a nice rose. Plus, there's an antique rose note. It's comfy but hardly scandalous.

VENICE ROCOCCO (Arquiste)

I didn't care for this one in summer, but in cold weather, it's a bury-your-nose-in-your-wrists stunner. Rose stars, infused with violet, chamomile, & powdery iris. Sweet animalic civet reminds me of Shalimar, but modern enough for the younger gen.

MAGIE ROUGE (Marrakech Imperial)

I'm thinking this one must work better in hot weather. I love its powdery acacia and violet notes, but in the cooler weather, it smells a bit like pencil lead and paper with a hint of velvety powderiness. Lesson learned.
