Spokane County has not committed to any regulations, but the Washington legislature is working with the state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to impose its own restrictions in a bill the nonprofit calls the “Driver Privacy Act.”

Nationally, state and cities have passed or considered legislation to require police to obtain a warrant before they seek historical data from the cameras, keep ALPR data from being shared with the federal government or otherwise restrict how police officers can collect and use Flock camera data.

And in the 2,301,239 searches made on the Spokane County Flock cameras from Jan. 1 to June 23, we found numerous examples of strange, suspicious and sometimes darkly comedic searches made by both local and nationwide law enforcement, like misspellings, a slur, vagaries and against-policy searches.

Sure, Flock cameras *can* be used to solve serious crimes. But the most charitable interpretation of Spokane County Flock success metrics shows they solve between 2 and 8 crimes for every 1,000 searches they make.
