If you were optimising for (local) economics, you would aim for zero birthrate (children are economically worthless for 18 years, and having children removes people from the workforce) and rely on immigration for working-age adults.

The logic is that racists¹ are concerned that the pure, superior White Race will be diluted by filthy swarthy degenerates and the world will fall into chaos.

¹: both explicit racists, but mostly people with unexamined racist beliefs. Basically everyone has *some*.

The thing is, he's kinda right, but in a way he absolutely does not intend.

This *has* been the dividing line, for some time, except that it is the now-visible Nazis leading the Republican party that have been ever-more-explicitly calling for their ideological opponents' deaths. For years! Decades!

Oh, and also: you're not shedding them at all (unlike, say, rubber from tires).

If your battery has 5KG of lithium in it when it rolls off the factory floor, it's still got 5KG of lithium in it when you decide it's degraded too much to be useful.
January 7, 2026 at 3:25 AM
It might be more or less easy to extract the lithium out of a dead battery, but that lithium is *there*.

You can't recycle burnt oil.
January 7, 2026 at 3:19 AM
Yeah, this is approaching the key difference, isn't it.

For batteries, the thing you need is the lithium, the actual atoms. Those atoms stay being lithium atoms no matter what you do with them.

For oil, the thing you need is the *chemical bonds*, which you use by *breaking* them.

Sorry, “but stupider”. Russia's plan (obviously) didn't work, but at the highest level of abstraction “race in and occupy the administrative capital” is a plan that *might* work, whereas “abduct the head of state and assume that means you rule the country” is… not.
January 3, 2026 at 9:11 PM
Oh. They're doing Russia's “Special Military Operation” plan against Ukraine, but stupid?
January 3, 2026 at 8:49 PM
The “satisfactory level of control over Ukraine” is *none* unless Ukrainians will it.

This restatement provides exactly as much justification for NATO expansion as the original statement.

Right. It's not going to get you anonymous peer-to-peer cash, but it *can* possibly fix “Paypal will arbitrarily seize your money and shut you down if they suspect you're doing something vaguely sexual”, at (hopefully) the cost of a bit more paperwork that you were going to have to do anyway.

Whenever I see these sorts of projects I'm reminded of www.taler.net, which seems to be actually pottering along pretty well, getting EU funding and apparently a trial deployment in Switzerland.

Is it the GNU association (which is, sadly, a negative) that's why this always seems overlooked?

For some things, “not clearly innocent” is probably the right standard!

At some point, when you're talking about grants of huge power, Blackstone's ratio flips - better that ten liberals lose power than one tyrant retain it.
December 23, 2025 at 9:30 PM
It's remarkable what needs bipartisan compromise so that something can get done versus what a principled stand must be taken on, even at the cost of no action 🤔

You have some tools and processes that you think will improve things, but everyone in that study believes that they've got a process that will improve things. No one in that study is adopting AI going “we don't expect this will improve things”, they *all* believe they'll be in the good end.
December 20, 2025 at 9:41 AM
*Can* you? Do we know what that looks like, and if so, why is the productivity improvement curve centred around “no improvement”?

It is *so wonderful* that a prime conflict of the film is “what does it actually mean for Superman to be good”?

There is *absolutely no reason* that architecture should demand overtime.

I'm sorry you were exploited, but “I was exploited for 25 years, why are they complaining about being exploited?” is bizarre.
