Indeed, this does become true when one is a proficient reader—as a student transitions from novice to expert in their word reading, they go from decoding to rapid recognition of familiar words. As readers experience this transition, more cognitive resources become available during reading and they can focus on extracting meaning from individual words, making connections, and drawing meaning from the text. While many secondary-aged students are skilled word readers, there are just as many who are not. Up until this transition to expert, word reading is an extremely demanding cognitive task—and it does our students a disservice when we undervalue how important skilled reading is and how challenging it can be.
