Pitoune: a foresting term describing pulpwood logs, usually fur or spruce in Quebec, cut into four foot sections, known in English as a ‘Bolt’.

currently covered in snow volcano's this area of the bay was only two weeks ago inhabited by hundreds of tundra swan, these two having broken off from the large group near shore for a dawdle amidst the ice floats #BirdoftheDay #LongNecks

this reflecting bowl, featuring tits on toadstools hits a twofer for #BirdoftheDay #Paridae #Reflections - it would be filled with water and little porcelain butterflies or frogs could be placed around the edge. apparently a popular novelty c. 1925
long sold a photograph of large shallow porcelain bowl finished in high glossy lustre blue, the central well featuring a drawn lustre image in bright colours of two great tits on orange toadstools - the bowl was supposed to be filled with water and separate animals, birds and butterflies could be placed in and around creating a fun little floating bowl centrepiece. apparently popular in the 1920's (Royal Winton, Grimwades, Byzanta Ware, Lustre & Long Sold.

everything's frozen & most of that is covered in snow, reflections have been few since mid-January. we heard hundreds of these guys passing over last night around 3:30am, poor things. #BirdoftheDay #Reflections
a small group of seven geese sit in a small patch of melted ice near a water plant, one of the few places that still remains unfrozen in feet in of ice. their wings are frosty as they try and keep warm a couple of looked over at the camera but most have their heads tucked into their wings. their reflections show in the murky coloured river waters. colours are dull and unexciting. it is winter.

The manufacture of handmade scissors - the blades are ‘dried in a warm bath of maize and walnuts’.

That just seems wonderful. How would you even find out this was best combination (and just for scissors. I don’t believe other blades require this Cleopatra style luxury in their bath water)

The blades are then hardened in a furnace so they're strong enough to take and keep an edge, re-heated to a lower temperature (a process called annealing or tempering) so they're soft enough to manipulate without snapping, 'rumbled' smooth by porcelain beads, dried in a warm bath of maize and walnuts, and burnished with Italian cotton until the polisher can see his
