The Riyria Revelations series by Michael J Sullivan. There are 3 books in this specific series. Once those are done, there is a prequel series for the two main characters, than another prequel series that chronicles the history and mythos of the world. And almost all the audiobooks are full cast.

The only one even remotely warranted to be on a list of "unplayable" JRPS is the Lunar one. But that is because the game spat in the face of the previous games and was a mess entirely. It was, and still is, widely hated.

That is a part of it, most definitely. But there has been a concerted effort since at least 2012-2015 to push a very specific idea of what men should be online. This, coupled with the loss of third places (areas for social gatherings like bowling alleys, arcades, theaters, etc.) /1
