I think there's a craving for moral clarity at this moment. As with any conflict, moral clarity is being owned by people with very different viewpoints. It's like when people were fighting wars in the Middle Ages, and both sides said that God was on their side. How do we understand who is right? I've been thinking a lot about Renee Good and her killing. I guess what I come down to is this: Even if you're breaking the law, no one deserves to be treated like that. So even if you argue that Renee Good was somehow breaking the law, she did not deserve to be shot in the head. And I guess what I'm seeing is this coarsening of morality in the United States, where people think she deserved it. So when you think of people like the inmates on death row, migrants, protesters, L.G.B.T.Q. people, people in Ukraine, people in Gaza - everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. That's what we're losing. What's being set forth is, only our side deserves to be treated with dignity, and the other side is horrible and evil and subhuman. Which is a disgrace, because for Jesus, there's no us and them — there's just us. And all of us deserve to be treated with dignity. I think the church has been very clear about that, and I'm grateful for that. That's not a political message; that's the Gospel. Everyone is a beloved child of God, everyone deserves to be treated with dignity - and not shot in the head.

To be blunt, none of that actually matters. You can say you're different from the rest of Americans, but to the rest of the world, that distinction doesn't exist. To us, your country is a single entity on the world stage, and it's threatening its allies. Think about how you view other countries. For example, Russian opposition doesn't change what Russia does, because that's their domestic politics. The same thing applies to the US too, except you had the power to choose your president, and you may still have it. So instead of coming here nonstop to apologise on behalf of your country for your constant need for sympathy, focus on actually changing something while you still can.

The inhumane treatment of those subject to deportation is a clear and obvious violation of the Catholic principle of the dignity of human persons. Despite Homan's assertions to the contrary, a person can't forfeit this dignity—which is God-given and inheres at the moment human life comes into being—simply because they've broken the law. [this sentence is highlighted by me for emphasis] Pope Leo has also expressed his concern about the tenuous relationship between immigration enforcement and public safety, a concern that is borne out by the data. Empirical studies have failed to justify the supposed grim choice between uncritical support of scorched-earth immigration enforcement and a lawless abyss of crime and danger. The Trump administration's response to this fact is to do what it has always done when confronted with inconvenient facts: assert an alternative set of "facts" with completely unjustified certainty and bravado.

The set of falsehoods is then run through a malformed theology, which downplays the inherent dignity of the human person and overemphasizes the permissibility of legal limitations on migration. There is already a microbiome of language crafted to suit this moral calculus; terms such as "toxic" or "suicidal" empathy, or "forced charity" are bandied about with abandon by many who find their politics aligned with Trump. This language is designed to construct a false dichotomy between the "well-formed" Catholic who affirms both the necessity and the permissibility of Trumpian border policy and the moral critic of this regime who is said to be motivated not by an alternative reading of Catholic doctrine, but by the distortion of that doctrine via secular liberalism and pathological feelings of compassion.

"The bishops have operated on very well-worked-out presuppositions of liberalism, and Popperian ideas about an 'Open Society,' that are now badly outdated," he said. "They would be wise to reexamine their priors on prudential matters as they are losing credibility through imprudent statements on prudential matters pertaining to national security and the common good." Julia Young, a historian and professor at The Catholic University of America, sees the issue differently, telling CNA that U.S. Catholic bishops have historically supported immigrants and that the Church has grown from European immigration in the mid-late 19th century and from Latin American immigration in the 20th century. "The growth of the Catholic Church over the last several decades has been largely due to immigration," she said. "So it does make sense that the Catholic bishops are concerned about immigrants and the immigrant population because that is their laity." Young said much of American Catholic history has been an "immigrant group coming in and being the target of nativism." She noted that the historical "anti-Catholic nativism" faced by those immigrant groups was the notion that Catholics were "not going to be able to become proper loyal American citizens because their loyalty was going to be to the pope."
