Indeed I think the idea is at times of flooding the river can over flow the narrow channel into the wider one.

The flooding was subsequently diverted downstream to Ancoats Vale, also known as the Lower Medlock Valley, just before the river enters the city centre and is either canalized or culverted.

Well, it stopped coffins from the nearby cemetery spilling through the city again but the flood of 1872 was exceptional, and the Medlock is a fairly small river as you can see. It is being renaturalised further upstream in Clayton Vale, where I have seen kingfishers.
