the character sheet preview they released really drives home that this isn't even a 5e-derived game that uses the base to do something else, it's literally just a 5e sourcebook. Exact same stats, skills, classes. Race/class/background character creation. Generic weapons, seemingly the same spells...

Actually what happened was even funnier. Because 3e handed out magic items like candy and numbers got really big, people started calling it D&Diablo since Diablo 2 was the new hotness. These people were all feeling very smug when WotC published multiple official Diablo books for 3e.
