Each item of our tax policy (and Gov policy more generally) should have a one line explanation for its existence. It should be assessed each year against this objective and challenged as to whether successful compared to alternatives. If not it should be jettisoned with aim of simplicity

Didn’t love the questioning this episode but very defensive from Torsten Bell which I believe stems from there not being an overall driving theme to the direction of the Government. It is a sticking plaster on a grazed knee whilst ignoring the fact the patients leg has fallen off.

Another disappointing, unambitious, sticking plaster budget starting from premise that small course directions will be sufficient whilst acknowledging major structural problems with the economy. So frustrating. Bad economically. No political bravery or nous. No plan for growth. No overall message.

Hard to contemplate by someone who feels their natural home is in the centre left but could this be the worst government in living memory? Squandering a huge majority and a public appetite for anything as long as it wasn’t more of the same by timidness, zero ideas and in-hoc to worst elements of X

“Progressive way forward whilst cracking down on immigration is going to prove really tough for the gov”. How about not building on failed Tory policy. Instead a mix of legal routes, efficient processing and international quotas. Making the case for immigration and not letting the issue dominate.

Labour have finally unlocked the "Tommy Robinson approves of our immigration policy" achievement badge.

It has taken 16 months, but their journey to an irredeemably vile party now seems complete.

They are the enemy now. Not the only enemy. But they are as much the enemy as the Tories ever were.

Government U-turned on raising the big tax levers and are instead likely to introduce a plethora of smaller tax changes. Each will be an anti-government headline. Each will appear to unfairly target one group. None will appear to be part of an overall plan or vision. How can they be this hopeless?
