Happier times in the compost bin a decade ago
A rotting orange and moldy greenish pumpkin half subsumed by compost. It has triangle carved eyes and a half-circle smiling mouth. The mold is mostly around the carved areas.

Question: do these "Chicago style pizza boxes" ever come with these little plastic pizza box lid supports? Usually they are round, but sometime they are triangular.
An approximately 2-inch circle of white plastic with three legs that are about 2 inches long The same item sitting in the top center of a pizza to keep the lid from touching the cheese in transit.

I found it funny (before I blocked them) that they were in such a hurry this Friday during the govt shutdown, the day before the ginormous No King's protests, that they forgot to change the profile text on two of them and they still said "official twitter account"

Recently they added Settings> Notifications> Activity from others, where you can get notified when someone specific makes a post or replies (to anyone). There is an on/off for each. I think these new settings are to allow people to stop others from doing that to them, as it is a little stalkerish.

NEA Axes Grants The National Endowment for the Arts has canceled all the creative writing fellowships awarded for 2026. Grant winners were notified by email that the writing category had been "withdrawn by the Agency.” The recipients, all published prose writers and poets, were to receive up to $50,000 each. The NEA statement said it "is updating its grantmaking policy priorities to focus funding on projects that reflect the nation's rich artistic heritage and creativity as prioritized by the Administration. Consequently we are cancelling existing funding opportunities that fall outside these new priorities." Funding for the "furtherance of the Administration's agenda" will instead focus on "Al competency" and "skilled trade jobs," making "the District of Columbia safe and beautiful." This is the latest in a series of cuts to arts support by the Trump administration.

This is my favorite! So mysterious and volcanic.

Futurism In their study, the authors probed several widely used LLMs, including OpenAI's GPT-4, GPT-3.5, and Meta's Llama 3.1-70b. To test them, the team asked the models to choose a product, scientific paper, or movie based on a description of the item. For each item, the AI was presented with a human-written and AI-written description. The results were clear-cut: the Als consistently preferred AI-generated descriptions. But there are some interesting wrinkles. Intriguingly, the AI-AI bias was most pronounced when choosing goods and products, and strongest with text generated with GPT-4. In fact, between GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and Meta's Llama 3.1, GPT-4 exhibited the strongest bias towards its own stuff - which is no small matter, since this once undergirded the most popular chatbot on the market before the advent of GPT-5. Could the AI text just be better? "Not according to people," Kulveit wrote in the thread. The team subjected 13 human research assistants to the same tests and found something striking: that the humans, too, tended to have a slight preference for AI-written stuff, with movies and scientific papers in particular. But this preference, to reiterate, was slight. The more important detail was that it was not nearly as strong as the preference that the Al models showed. "The strong bias is unique to the Als themselves," Kulveit said.
