Especially not then. Out running errands this aft. Sidewalks packed with poorly dressed people trudging through the slush, which always makes me think of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. From now on, maybe I'll think of the Yanks attacking Quebec city. How chic the Quebec defenders look!

I have no thoughts to spare for those guys.

I enjoyed the maps. I remembered them from the book, but they are so impressive projected onto a giant screen, rather than squished into a book page. The outline of the continent grew more accurate as time passed, the political borders were as fluid and ambiguous as Rorschach inkblots.

Yep. Lawren Harris was the master. Note the backgrounds, they pop!

Three hours later: the sun has set, the wind has dropped, and the full moon has risen to show vast ice plates drifting on the current. By morning the river will be frozen, set for four months of winter.

Light blue sky, dark blue water, bright white waves: the stark contrasts drag my eye away from the computer but defeat my phone camera.

A 20kt North West wind kicks up white caps like a flock of sheep fleeing a dog, registers a windchill of -20C, and darkens the water almost to black in the gusts.

Cloudless light blue sky. Is the sky always a lighter blue in winter?

The snag with dubbing your opponents a wretched motley is when they defeat you, it reveals you as something worse. A poxy ravenous mob comes to mind. Providence may or may not have smiled, always hard to tell, but their usual ally, Gen. Smallpox, deserted and they forgot their travelers checks.

Canadians prefer to talk about doing something, rather than doing something. Possibly due to perverse incentives. See @aradwanski.bsky.social: bsky.app/profile/arad...
Has any prime minister ever gotten less political value out of a giant investment than Justin Trudeau got from TMX? Obviously environmental groups/voters were never going to like it, and most everyone else just pretends it never happened because it complicates the narrative.

Do Aaron Willard and Moses Child get recognition as the CIA's founders?

But no traders from the 13 colonies?

What was the loyalty test? Makes me think of the internment of Japanese-Canadians without a loyalty test, merely ethnicity. A traditional Canadian custom? How will we treat people born in the USA when Trump invades?

I am quite sure that left handed people learn better if they write with their left hand. I am certain that you really do care about that. Numerous studies show that everyone, left or right handed, is more successful writing by hand rather than by keyboard. www.frontiersin.org/journals/psy...

As traditional handwriting is progressively being replaced by digital devices, it is essential to investigate the implications for the human brain. Brain ele...

"I don’t care if, on average, people learn better writing by hand." I think you should.

Why bother to switch OS? Just unpin everything strange from the taskbar.

Lovely feeling. Shouldn't the houses be on the hilltop, rather than the valley bottom?

How does the puffin do that? Catch another fish in the beak without dropping the previous fish?
